Students are being invited to submit designs for a ceremonial mace intended to represent the Fenton area within Stoke-on-Trent. The city council has chosen to collaborate with the University of Staffordshire on this initiative, which forms part of the city’s centenary celebrations. Fenton stands as one of the six towns that unified in 1910, eventually forming what became recognized as the city of Stoke-on-Trent in 1925. Currently, Fenton does not possess its own chain of office or ceremonial mace. The submitted designs are slated for judgment in early 2025, with the selected mace to be presented to Fenton in April, thereby becoming a component of the city’s civic regalia. The participating young designers have received instructions to incorporate elements that reference the ceramics industry, acknowledging Fenton’s historical connections to this trade. Stoke-on-Trent’s Lord Mayor, Lyn Sharpe, expressed her hope that the designers would “really get a feel for the passion and pride us Fentonians have”.
