Students demonstrating against the conflict in Gaza have occupied the grounds adjacent to a notable university structure. Activists from Cambridge for Palestine initially gained entry to Greenwich House in the city on Friday, subsequently establishing a presence outside Senate House, situated close to King’s College Chapel. The organization asserted that the university had failed to fulfill prior commitments regarding the examination of investments within the defense and arms sectors. A spokesperson for the university characterized the disturbance caused by a “small group of students is unacceptable”. University personnel whose offices were located in the building received advice to conduct their work remotely on Wednesday. Demonstrators were observed utilizing ladders to access the lawn, where they affixed flags and banners to the railings. Senate House has served as the venue for university graduation ceremonies since the 18th Century. Morris, identifying himself as an undergraduate student and a representative for the group, stated: “They agreed to negotiations after the encampment in the summer and we agreed to decamp… that has not taken place in the way that was agreed or desired so we are here again.” The organization has presented several demands, among them requesting that the university categorize Israel’s military actions in Gaza as genocide, and implement a boycott of “institutions and companies” deemed “complicit” in the “systematic killing and starving of innocent civilians” in Palestine. The university communicated its acknowledgment of the “importance of peaceful protest within the law, and the deeply-held concerns” regarding the ongoing circumstances in Gaza, Israel, and Lebanon. It further stated: “On 25 November, the University Council reaffirmed membership of the working group to explore the university’s relationship with the defence industry. “The terms of reference for this group were also reaffirmed.”This important work will now commence.”
