The community of Stratton, located near Cirencester in Gloucestershire, is being urged to display flags to commemorate its heritage. This initiative is part of a history festival and will feature the village’s historical aspects during its inaugural Flaggery Day, scheduled for Saturday. Local residents are invited to create and exhibit their own flags, while an art exhibition by the residents of Stratton Court will also be open for visitors. Jay Haigh, the event coordinator, encouraged participation, stating, “Fly a flag for Stratton outside your home or business and help make Stratton flutter.” Although this year’s Flaggery Day is integrated into the Cirencester History Festival, which concludes on Sunday, Ms Haigh expressed her aspiration for it to evolve into an independent annual event. She emphasized its core purpose, remarking, “It’s all about heritage. There’s always something to learn about your home or the area you live in.” Teresa Forrest, an artist and resident of Stratton Court, has created two substantial flags for the occasion, alongside an illustration depicting the village. Linda Lloyd, CEO of Stratton Court, commented, “I look forward to her exhibition, as well as the village trail and all the beautiful tributes to the place we call home.” The day’s agenda includes diverse activities throughout the village, offering visitors the opportunity to take a walking tour to view the displayed flags and art installations. Maps for the history trail will be accessible at Stratton School, where students have also put up their own banners.
