Given the close-knit nature of Scotland’s film and television sector, the BAFTA Scotland awards often resemble a family gathering, with attendees familiar with one another and dressed formally. While there is no bride or groom, attention at tonight’s event will largely focus on Ashley Storrie and Richard Gadd, both receiving their first nominations. Ashley Storrie’s television series, “Dinosaur,” is nominated for four awards. Storrie drew upon her personal experience with autism to develop the character of Nina, a Glasgow palaeontologist whose life is disrupted by her sister’s unexpected engagement. This occasion will be poignant for Ashley, whose mother, comedian Janey Godley, passed away just two weeks prior. Storrie first attended these awards with her mother at age 15, and they have been present together most years since. Janey Godley’s funeral and “final tour” are scheduled for the upcoming weekend. The Glasgow ceremony also marks Richard Gadd’s initial public appearance in his home country since his program, “Baby Reindeer,” secured six Emmys and initiated a multimillion-pound legal dispute. Fiona Harvey has publicly identified herself as the stalker portrayed by Jessica Gunning in the series, which originated at the Edinburgh Fringe and subsequently became one of Netflix’s most popular productions. Harvey disputes Gadd’s depiction of events, which are presented as “a true story,” and an American judge recently determined that her defamation lawsuit can proceed. Both Gadd and Storrie are also contenders for another accolade of the evening: the nation’s favourite Scot, determined by public vote. They are among six nominees for this award, a group that includes two actors who have played Dr Who, David Tennant and Ncuti Gatwa, alongside Jack Lowden from “Slow Horses” and Abby Cook of “Blue Peter.” Another established award is the Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting, which this year will be presented to sports reporter and presenter Hazel Irvine. Irvine, who commenced her career with STV’s Scotsport in 1987, has been a pioneering figure for women in sports journalism for over three decades, covering 18 winter and summer Olympics, four World Cup finals, Wimbledon, and the London Marathon. The complete list of Bafta Scotland nominations includes: ACTOR FILM, ACTRESS FILM, ACTOR TELEVISION, ACTRESS TELEVISION, DIRECTOR FACTUAL, DIRECTOR FICTION, ENTERTAINMENT, FACTUAL SERIES, FEATURE FILM, FEATURES, NEWS & CURRENT AFFAIRS, SHORT FILM & ANIMATION, SINGLE DOCUMENTARY, TELEVISION SCRIPTED, WRITER FILM/TELEVISION. The Bafta Scotland Awards will be broadcast live on the Bafta Scotland YouTube channel. Watch highlights on BBC Scotland and BBCiPlayer on Wednesday 20 November. Copyright 2024 BBC.
