Strong winds and rainfall associated with Storm Darragh have resulted in the cancellation of several events in the period leading up to Christmas. The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for wind, affecting Nottinghamshire and the broader East Midlands region, from Saturday until Sunday evening, with wind gusts potentially reaching nearly 60mph in certain areas. Parks and other sites within the county also remained shut on Saturday, citing concerns for public safety. This disruption follows closely on the heels of Storm Bert, which caused similar issues in November. In Nottingham, organizers of the Winter Wonderland attraction announced that its observation wheel would be inaccessible to the public on Saturday, due to the adverse weather. Across the River Trent in West Bridgford, an annual Christmas drone show at the Trent Bridge cricket ground, originally scheduled for Saturday evening, has been postponed until Monday. Michael Temple, Trent Bridge commercial director, commented: “Postponement isn’t a decision that anyone has taken lightly but when we look to the skies at 6pm we’ll all understand why drones can’t fly in what will be a pretty violent storm.” The marketing firm Yuup and organizers Celestial stated they would continue to monitor the weather conditions closely and were preparing to proceed with the second performance planned for Sunday. Clumber Park in Worksop was also compelled to cancel a second Christmas fayre this weekend, after an earlier event in November was called off due to Storm Bert. The National Trust, which manages the location, decided to fully close the site to visitors. Additionally, the organizers of Ruddington Village Market cancelled its final market of the year, expressing that they were “absolutely gutted” in a social media announcement. “This is not something we take lightly – we know just how important December markets are to indie traders, and a highlight in the festive calendar,” they conveyed. Wollaton Hall and Deer Park, located in Nottingham, announced its closure for Saturday, with a “delayed opening” anticipated on Sunday.
