Steps providing access to a beach, which had been rendered unusable after being severely impacted by winter storms, have now been replaced. The route leading down to Sheps Hollow, located off the South West Coast Path to the east of Swanage Bay, had been out of commission since February. Dorset Council stated that a new wooden boardwalk now precedes the steps, which are equipped with an anti-slip top intended to “help keep people safe, and allow dogs to climb”. The authority also mentioned that the new steps, which “may be a little steep for some”, required attachment to a large flat rock because concrete would be eroded by tidal movements. The council extended its thanks to beach visitors for their patience and understanding during the closure, expressing its hope that the new steps would “be used by beach visitors and their dogs for many years to come”. These steel steps now ensure full pedestrian access is reinstated between the north end of Swanage beach and Ballard Down.
