Toys that were stolen from a charity’s doorstep have been returned following public anger expressed on social media platforms. The items were taken from Baby Necessities in Romsey, Hampshire, on Monday, after they had been left outside subsequent to a delivery. Gillian Wilkins, the baby bank’s funding and communications manager, reported that “everyone was incensed” when the organization posted about the theft on Facebook. However, she confirmed that the items, which are designated for a family in need this Christmas, were brought back on Thursday. Ms. Wilkins, who has been working with Baby Necessities for two-and-a-half years, explained that the charity was “heartbroken” once it became apparent the toys had been pilfered from outside its premises at The Premier Centre industrial estate. They subsequently shared a photograph of an emptied box, left by the thief, on social media, which provoked an angry reaction. One comment on the post stated: “Shame on whoever did this.” “The public reaction and support was heart-warming – text donations, online donations and our online wishlist all saw an increase,” Ms. Wilkins remarked. She informed the BBC that a man later telephoned to confess to the theft, claiming “he didn’t know what he was doing when he took the items.” “I think he was afraid of the backlash on social media,” Ms. Wilkins commented. She further specified that the items were dropped off at a neighbouring unit on the industrial estate. In an updated social media post, the charity extended its thanks to people for their support. “We can now help the child it was meant for – and many more,” the post declared. Ms. Wilkins noted that awareness of their organization has increased since the incident. She added, “It’s awful that it takes something bad like this to happen for us to get noticed but we’re just trying to make a positive out of what was a negative situation.”
