Steve Cooper secured the support of Leicester’s senior players, including Jamie Vardy, but encountered difficulties in gaining the full backing of other squad members. The former Nottingham Forest manager was dismissed on Sunday after overseeing just 15 games at King Power Stadium, having succeeded Enzo Maresca in the summer. Enzo Maresca had guided the Foxes to the Championship title last season, ensuring their immediate return to the Premier League, and was highly regarded by the team. His detailed and precise tactical approach, characterized by a clear and concise plan, contrasted with Cooper’s less expansive style, which prioritized quicker forward ball movement. Some players found adapting to Cooper’s approach challenging. According to sources who spoke to BBC Sport, a degree of frustration emerged among some squad members regarding the extent to which they were expected to depart from the strategies that had yielded success in the previous season. Despite this, senior players, with Jamie Vardy at the forefront, remained supportive, even as others did not. Players reportedly reverted to the previous methods established by Maresca. Cooper recognized this tendency and was attempting to implement changes, but he lacked the necessary time to achieve results without immediate pressure. Cooper’s sole pre-season objective for the team was Premier League survival. Notably, Leicester’s spending was lower compared to the other newly promoted clubs, Southampton and Ipswich. With only two victories from 12 Premier League matches, the team currently occupies 16th position. Leicester’s management concluded that, despite their desire for the appointment to succeed, the challenges proved too substantial to surmount.
