Steve Bannon, a former advisor to Donald Trump, has exited prison following a four-month incarceration. Benjamin O’Cone, a spokesperson for the Bureau of Prisons, informed the BBC that Bannon, aged 70, departed a correctional institution in Danbury, Connecticut, on Tuesday. Bannon, known as a conservative podcast host and a pivotal figure in Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, received a conviction in 2022 on two charges of contempt of Congress. This conviction stemmed from his refusal to adhere to a congressional subpoena linked to an inquiry into the January 6 Capitol riot. On his podcast, subsequent to his release, Bannon stated: “The four months in federal prison not only didn’t break me, it empowered me.” He added: “I am more energised and more focused than I’ve ever been in my entire life.” During a news conference he conducted on Tuesday afternoon, Bannon indicated that with only one week remaining until the 2024 presidential election, his primary objective would be to mobilize voters to back Trump. Bannon remarked: “We were on the cusp of having an incredible victory that could actually be a potential landslide.” He also briefly discussed his period of incarceration, mentioning that he was once afforded the chance to instruct a civics and government course for other prisoners. Prior to his imprisonment, he had pledged to persist in assisting Trump and his campaign even while incarcerated. Speaking to the BBC before entering prison, he stated: “I’ve served my country now for the last 10 or so years focusing on this,” in reference to politics and Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. He added: “If I have to do it in a prison, I do it in a prison – it makes no difference at all.” Bannon has maintained his allegiance to Trump and his antagonism toward Democratic personalities, notwithstanding a previous disagreement between them during Trump’s presidential term. Before his incarceration, he declared: “I’m a political prisoner of Nancy Pelosi, I’m a political prisoner of Merrick Garland; I’m a political prisoner of Joe Biden and the corrupt Biden establishment.” In May, the Trump loyalist asserted on his podcast that Democrats were “going to do everything to steal this election”. He has consistently made false assertions that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. Bannon continues to confront additional legal challenges, having been indicted in 2022 on accusations of money laundering, fraud, and conspiracy within a distinct New York state legal proceeding. He stands accused of defrauding contributors to a fundraising effort that pledged to construct a segment of a wall along the US-Mexico border. Bannon has entered a plea of not guilty concerning these charges. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved. The BBC is not responsible for the content of external sites.
