The Birmingham Alexandra Theatre hosted a glamorous opening night for a new musical featuring songs by the band Steps. The musical, titled Here and Now, debuted in Birmingham on Tuesday. The group has since revealed plans for the production to tour other UK cities in summer 2025. Having dedicated seven years to the musical’s development, the band members described watching the show alongside the audience as a fulfilling experience. “It’s a really wonderful feeling to actually sit in the audience and enjoy the music that we’ve been singing for 27 years,” stated Lisa Scott-Lee. “It’s a dream come true for all of us and I feel proud, it’s like another milestone for Steps in our career.” “We’re usually the ones singing our songs on stage – it’s a really wonderful feeling to enjoy the music, I’m so proud of everybody.” Steps is recognized as one of the United Kingdom’s most successful pop groups in history. The narrative of the musical centers on a group of friends employed at a seaside supermarket, who express through song and dance a summer romance that takes a tragic turn. Among the songs featured in Here and Now are “5,6,7,8,” “Better Best Forgotten,” and “Last Thing On My Mind.” Faye Tozer light-heartedly remarked, “We’ll finally know how it feels like to go to a Steps concert.” “The musical is bigger and better than any of us could imagine.” Claire Richards expressed her hope that the musical would also resonate positively with the audience.
