The proprietor of a jewelry establishment has declared the impending closure of its location in a town, citing his retirement and the difficult climate for local commerce. Steffans Jewellers, situated on Abington Square in Northampton, is scheduled to commence its liquidation sale on November 9, marking the end of 48 years of trading within the town. Steffan Suter, the owner, established the jewelry business in 1976 when he was 24 years old. After 18 months of operation, he successfully acquired the adjacent unit, allowing him to enlarge his store. Mr. Suter commented: “I was hoping to make it 50 years in Northampton but the town’s retail environment isn’t as good as it used to be.” Wes Suter, Mr. Suter’s son, who started working at the establishment at the age of nine, stated that the family “tried its best” to bolster Northampton, but encountered opposition when presenting concepts to the council aimed at enhancing the town center’s attractiveness to shoppers. Mark Mullen, the operations manager for the Northampton town centre Business Improvement District, remarked: “There is huge positivity around the new Market Square and with work due to complete soon on Abington Street and Fish Street, plus the arrival of Stack, the beginnings of a bright new era for Northampton town centre are starting to emerge”. A representative from West Northamptonshire Council commented: “We’re saddened to hear about the closure of Steffans and acknowledge the significant role it has played in Northampton’s history and retail offering. As a council, we are committed to creating a vibrant environment where businesses can grow and succeed. Supporting our small business community is a key priority for the council.” Although the Northampton premises will cease operations, the father and son duo recently inaugurated a new outlet in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, approximately 20 miles distant.
