A steel mast was erected mere feet away from a 132,000-volt overhead electricity line. Electricity North West engineers reportedly expressed being “speechless” upon discovering the structure on the pavement in Kiddrow Lane, Burnley, on Wednesday. This necessitated cutting power and arranging for the removal of the “highly dangerous” pole. Paul Killilea, representing Electricity North West, characterized the situation as “incredibly serious,” stating that it could have resulted in fatalities. Mr. Killilea further advised: “People need to be aware of their surroundings, particularly if they’re erecting steel poles, scaffolding or even ladders anywhere near our network.” The company responsible for erecting the mast, which the electricity company chose not to name, subsequently dismantled it while Electricity North West teams were still present at the location. The mast was positioned 1 meter (3 feet) from the live power line. Electricity North West issued a recommendation for anyone uncertain about carrying out work near power lines to contact them. The 132,000-volt network represents the highest voltage at which Electricity North West operates. Engineering standards mandate that no objects should be within several meters of a power line, as electricity at such elevated voltages possesses the capability to arc up to three meters through the air to a conductor, thereby energizing it. Burnley Borough Council has been contacted for a statement.
