Lukas Gortler’s excellent volley equalized for St Gallen at Windsor Park. Hugo Vandermersch then scored the decisive goal in the 79th minute, extinguishing Larne’s aspirations of achieving further European history as St Gallen emerged 2-1 victors at Windsor Park. Following previous defeats to Molde and Shamrock Rovers in the European Conference League, Larne had anticipated securing their initial European point or win when Abdoulaye Diaby inadvertently scored an own goal in the third minute. This opening goal elicited the loudest cheers of the evening from the home supporters as Larne’s players celebrated. However, the Swiss Super League team soon demonstrated their quality. St Gallen, who had a goal disallowed shortly before Larne’s opener, achieved a deserved equalizer in the 29th minute when captain Lukas Gortler struck a superb volley past Rohan Ferguson. Larne, the first Irish Premiership team to reach this stage of European competition, competed well against the Swiss side, but the pivotal moment arrived with 11 minutes remaining when Vandermersch converted a close-range shot following a counter-attack. This outcome was a crushing blow for Larne, who now sit at the bottom of the Conference League table after three losses, while St Gallen registered their first win in this season’s competition. Preceding the match, St Gallen’s enthusiastic 2,000-strong travelling fanbase marched through Belfast’s streets to the stadium, contributing to a tumultuous initial three minutes at Windsor Park. The Swiss team believed they had taken the lead after 90 seconds when Hungary international Kevin Csoboth curled a shot into the corner after being played through by Chima Okoroji, but the offside flag was raised. Moments later, Larne took the lead, igniting fervent celebrations even as St Gallen’s flares were still fading. The Irish Premiership champions advanced, and Jordan McEneff attempted to set up Andy Ryan, but defender Diaby extended a leg, diverting the ball into his own net. Despite the early celebrations, the game largely became one-sided thereafter. Mihalio Stevanovic volleyed an attempt directly at Ferguson, while Chadrac Akolo, Okoroji, and Diaby all squandered promising opportunities. Ryan, operating as a lone striker, headed directly into the hands of goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi during a rare Larne attack, but the visitors drew level in the 29th minute. Okoroji delivered an enticing diagonal cross, which captain Gortler met with a powerful volley from a tight angle, sending the ball into the corner of the net and leaving Ferguson unable to react. St Gallen maintained their offensive pressure, generating further opportunities via Akolo and Bastien Toma. Larne concluded the first half strongly, with Cian Bolger heading the ball across the goalmouth, though without connecting with a teammate in a red shirt just before the interval. St Gallen’s 2000-strong travelling fanbase filled Windsor Park with considerable sound and visual display. The visiting side, having previously suffered defeats against Cercle Brugge and Fiorentina in European competition, created the first scoring chance of the second half when Ferguson parried Akolo’s low free-kick from the edge of the penalty area. Larne regrouped and applied continuous pressure, yet they were unable to fashion a clear scoring opportunity or deliver the crucial final pass. Csoboth, consistently active on the left flank, unleashed a shot that Bolger effectively blocked, although play was subsequently halted for a handball infringement. A moment of concern arose when Gortler chipped a pass forward for Willem Geubbels, who appeared to be at a disadvantage in reaching the ball, which was then missed by the advancing Ferguson. Fortunately for Larne, Ferguson and Bolger collectively managed to avert the danger. The winning goal originated when Gortler located Christian Witzig on the wing, and the substitute then delivered a cross for Vandermersch to convert, despite the defensive efforts of Levi Ives. The enthusiastic celebrations by the visiting team’s players and staff underscored the challenge Larne had presented. With momentum on their side, captain Bolger needed to be vigilant to clear Gortler’s cross, before Diaby’s header from a corner went just wide. Substitute Moustapha Cisse believed he had scored a third goal in stoppage time after breaking clear, rounding Ferguson, and slotting the ball in, but the play was ruled offside. The substitute subsequently compelled Ferguson to make a robust save as the away team sought to manage the remaining time. Larne remains winless halfway through their inaugural European campaign. Their upcoming fixtures include away games against Olimpija in Slovenia and Belarusian club Dinamo Minsk, culminating in a final home fixture against Gent.
