Daniel Storey, the chief football writer for the i, expressed his view that Liverpool manager Arne Slot is effectively “finding players for multiple positions.” This approach is seen as Slot’s strategy to rotate his squad in anticipation of a demanding season. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, Storey lauded the Dutchman’s in-game tactical decisions. He noted that against Arsenal, Slot observed his side being overwhelmed at the top of the pitch, leading him to position Curtis Jones deeper, effectively forming a midfield three at half-time. Storey explained that Slot sought a resolution to gain control of the midfield, execute fundamental tasks effectively, and then build from there. However, Storey pointed out that Slot’s squad lacks significant depth beyond the attacking line. Consequently, rotation will be necessary as Liverpool players are expected to experience fatigue throughout the season, requiring Slot to maintain this rotational approach. Slot appears to be implementing this strategy currently by identifying players capable of performing in various positions. For example, Curtis Jones can operate as a number six or in a more advanced role. Similarly, Nunez, Jota, and Diaz are all adaptable to different positions within the forward line. Storey also mentioned that “Trent [Alexander-Arnold] has spoken about playing in the number 10, centrally in midfield, and sometimes being on the outside or inverted.” Storey concluded by stating that “That variation can make you look like a different team. It can make you hard to defend against.”
