A local authority has given its consent for a proposal to transform a former public house into specialist supported accommodation. An application was lodged with Peterborough City Council by Squirrel Wood Properties for the redevelopment of The Wheatsheaf, situated on Eastfield Road in Peterborough. The site is slated to feature sixteen one-bedroom units, comprising twelve apartments and four bungalows, alongside eleven parking spaces. These provisions are intended to address the “increasing demand for such accommodation” within the locality. The establishment, which is also scheduled for demolition as part of the scheme, had previously undergone restoration in 2019 before ceasing operations later that same year. The application drew some opposition from residents in the vicinity, who voiced concerns that the removal of the traditional public house building would negatively impact the area’s character and could lead to increased traffic congestion around Eastfield Road. According to the planning statement, the housing is designated for individuals with a range of disabilities, aiming to “help them lead an independent life in with access to on-site support as and when required”. It has been suggested that approximately six employees would be engaged at the premises. The city council formally approved the plans for the specialized accommodation on Wednesday.
