Councillors have given their approval for the construction of 34 new business units in Sparkford, a decision that comes after a two-year delay. The initial permission for these units was anticipated in September, but Somerset Council had to postpone the decision due to the departure of the planning officer overseeing the project. The development is expected to generate new employment opportunities at the location, which is situated on the A359 in Sparkford and offers direct access to the A303. These units are intended to serve as starter premises for small businesses within the region. The proposed business units will be organized into eight blocks on a greenfield plot. This site is positioned between the former Haynes publishing facility to its north and a future development comprising 45 residences and a 60-bed care home. The plans also incorporate an access road originating from the A359, which will offer a direct connection for the new businesses to the A303. Separately, National Highways’ project to dual the road section connecting Sparkford and Ilchester is projected to conclude by the spring of 2025. Richard Squires, a local resident and member of Sparkford Parish Council, voiced his opposition to the proposals during the committee meeting held last week. He stated: “This is an ancient water meadow of historical interest, and one of the last green spaces in the village – it is a haven for wildlife.” He further elaborated on his concerns, adding: “There are many issues with flooding in the area, and this field floods whenever there is heavy rain.” Squires concluded by saying: “If the field is covered with concrete and tarmac, it will create flooding issues elsewhere.” Councillor Henry Hobhouse, representing the Castle Cary division which encompasses Sparkford, restated his earlier concerns regarding flooding in the village. These concerns were initially raised in late-September, prior to his resignation from the committee. Notwithstanding these objections, the committee proceeded to approve the plans, with the vote tally being six in favor and two against. For updates, follow BBC Somerset on Facebook and X.
