A mountain rescue organization operating in southern Scotland has reported its most active month to date. The Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team (TVMRT) responded to over a dozen calls for assistance during October. This level of activity has set the team on course for 2024 to become its busiest year on record. During this period of heightened demand, TVMRT’s operations included providing aid to hillwalkers, mountain bikers, and a pet dog. The volunteer rescuers were dispatched to incidents across a “significant geographical spread,” with many occurring beyond the boundaries of the Scottish Borders. The charity indicated that several of its rescues conducted at this time of year necessitated operations in darkness. To enhance its capabilities for such missions, TVMRT is currently seeking to raise £3,000 for the purchase of thermal imaging camera equipment. In total, team members collectively dedicated nearly 400 hours to various incidents throughout October. These operations encompassed three searches for missing individuals, rescues involving hillwalkers and mountain bikers, and one false alarm. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
