A rail service provider is deploying additional four-carriage train sets in anticipation of expanding its timetable with more services, effective December 15. Southeastern announced it would acquire two extra Class 377 trains, resulting from a collaborative agreement with Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR). According to a spokesperson, these trains are expected to contribute to a more dependable service and an enhanced customer experience, featuring amenities such as air conditioning, at-seat plug sockets, and upgraded onboard information systems. An additional 11 Class 377 trains are slated to commence passenger operations on the Southeastern network prior to December 2025. Their primary purpose will be to substitute older train models operating on the Maidstone East and Tunbridge Wells routes. Southeastern is presently developing strategies to replace aging rolling stock throughout its entire network, with some units having been in service for three decades. Certain newer train models have already commenced operations across the network. The updated timetable incorporates the addition of 220 extra weekly services, notably including the extension of two evening services from Charing Cross to Maidstone East through to Ashford International on weekdays. Sophie Barker, who serves as head of major programmes at Southeastern, stated: “The arrival of these trains is a key milestone in our ongoing work to provide a more reliable service by modernising our fleet.” These 13 trains will augment the 23 existing Class 377 units currently operated by Southeastern.
