Southeastern Railway has received two awards in recognition of its efforts to prevent individuals from self-harming on its railway network. The rail operator, which manages routes connecting South East London with areas throughout Kent and East Sussex, reported that its employees carried out 204 “life-saving interventions” during the period from April to October. This achievement comes after 1,813 Southeastern employees underwent suicide prevention training. Southeastern was presented with two accolades at the Kent Mental Wellbeing awards, an event coordinated by the charity Mind. One of these awards recognized the “Pass It On” campaign, an initiative designed to prompt professionals in mental health, social services, probation, law enforcement, drug and alcohol agencies, housing departments, and community safety partnerships to exchange information regarding individuals at risk of self-harm on the rail network. Collette Windsor, Southeastern’s trespass and suicide reduction manager, stated: “Every death on the railway is a tragedy and has a huge impact on the loved ones of the person involved, as well as our staff and passengers who witness incidents.” She further explained that Southeastern equips its frontline personnel with the necessary skills to engage with individuals about whom they have concerns. She added: “From the large number of successful interventions so far this year, we know it’s making a huge difference.” Dr. David Palmer of Mind in Bexley and East Kent commented: “Now more than ever, mental health services are critical. “The challenges posed post-pandemic, the cost-of-living crisis, rising poverty, financial stress and global political upheavals have severely impacted public mental health.” He noted that the effects of mental anxieties and stress can be “hugely debilitating”. He emphasized: “Accessible support and local networks must be clearly and readily in place whenever someone feels they need that vital extra help or connection.” For those seeking assistance, the BBC Action Line web page provides a compilation of organizations prepared to offer support and guidance.
