South Hams District Council has put forward proposals for revisions to car parking fees and the establishment of a resident parking discount program. This initiative comes after a four-year period during which car park prices were kept unchanged to “support residents and businesses throughout the cost-of-living crisis.” The authority stated that it was “regrettably considering increasing charges” starting 1 April, citing its inability to “no longer afford the significant rising costs of delivering services.” According to the council, a review of parking fees at comparable facilities throughout the South West revealed that charges within the South Hams were “lower than most.” The authority has invited the public to provide feedback on its proposed changes. The council elaborated: “Residents of the South Hams would be able to apply for membership of a new resident discounts scheme. “This will allow them to access lower parking charges at all their council-owned car parks via the cashless parking app.”Those who don’t have a smartphone will receive an extra half hour parking time instead.” The public consultation is scheduled to conclude on 5 January 2025. The council further indicated that the definitive decision is expected by January 2025.
