This week, Somerset experienced the onset of winter, marked by the initial snowfall that transformed its woodlands and fields into a picturesque winter scene. However, this brought challenges, as driving conditions in the southern part of the county turned hazardous. Concurrently, the Somerset carnival circuit concluded, a DJ performance took place atop a double-decker bus, and a Midsomer Norton resident celebrated a significant birthday. The county’s inaugural snowfall occurred on Thursday, offering numerous opportunities for photography, though drivers simultaneously received warnings about dangerous road conditions, leading to several road closures. The 2024 Somerset County Carnivals culminated on Saturday, featuring approximately 50 carts participating in the procession through Glastonbury. Subsequently, the much-awaited results were revealed, with Huckyduck Carnival Club securing the County Cup for its Brunel-themed cart. On Thursday at Wincanton, jockey Harry Kimber, aboard My Mate Polly, successfully cleared the final fence to claim victory in the Christmas Parties At Wincanton Racecourse Novices’ Handicap Chase. In connection with the carnival events, a collective of DJs commemorated the 376 bus route, which connects Glastonbury and Bristol, by staging a performance on board one of its vehicles. This week, Olympic and Paralympic athletes convened at Team Bath, marking their first reunion since the Paris Games held earlier this summer. Among those present, Dimitri Coutya, Kieran Bird, Becky Wilde, Dan Bethell, and Piers Gilliver were observed proudly showcasing their medals. Robert Warners, a resident of a Midsomer Norton care home and one of the last surviving D Day veterans, marked his 105th birthday on Wednesday. For updates, follow BBC Somerset on Facebook and X.
