According to the Home Office, 230 individuals traversed the English Channel aboard small vessels on Thursday. The month of October recorded 5,417 such crossings, marking the highest monthly total observed since October 2022. This brings the cumulative number for 2024 to 30,661. A spokesperson for the Home Office commented, stating: “We all want to end dangerous small boat crossings, which threaten lives and undermine our border security.” The 5,417 crossings in October 2024 represent the highest monthly figure since October 2022, a month in which 6,900 individuals made the journey. That year, 2022, concluded with an annual total of 45,774 crossings, according to data from the Home Office, and remains the highest annual total documented thus far. Another Home Office spokesman stated: “The people-smuggling gangs do not care if the vulnerable people they exploit live or die, as long as they pay. We will stop at nothing to dismantle their business models and bring them to justice.” The Home Office also reported that 3,600 individuals lacking the legal right to reside in the UK were deported between July 5 and August 29.
