Sir Rod Stewart, the 79-year-old singer-songwriter, has indicated he may need to part with his collection of five sports cars. This consideration stems from the extensive presence of potholes on the roadways near his residence. In March 2022, footage captured him personally using a shovel to fill depressions along the damaged road close to Harlow in Essex. Writing on his Instagram account, Sir Rod stated: “I am extremely fortunate and eternally grateful to be the owner of these five beautiful hybrid sports cars, which, in my opinion, are true ‘works of art’.” He then added, “Unfortunately, because of the potholes on our roads, I may have to find new owners for them.” Two years prior, Sir Rod had taken it upon himself to attempt road repairs, asserting that “no-one can be bothered to do it”. He commented at the time: “People are bashing their cars up. The other day, there was an ambulance with a burst tyre. “My Ferrari can’t go through here at all.” Alongside a picture of himself and friends filling in the holes, he remarked then: “This is the state of the road near where I live in Harlow and it’s been like this for ages.” He continued, “So me and the boys thought we would come and do it ourselves.” Following the singer’s do-it-yourself efforts, Essex County Council subsequently repaired the roads. A spokesperson for the council commented: “We would be happy for Sir Rod Stewart to accompany one of our road-patching gangs for a day.” In his recent Instagram post this week, Sir Rod shared: “I’ve been driving these iconic Italian cars since the 70s, and I absolutely love and adore them.” He also noted, “This post is for my fans – thank you, as you are the sole reason I own them.” Responding to Sir Rod’s latest concerns regarding potholes, a spokesperson for Essex County Council conveyed: “We’d like to reassure Sir Rod Stewart that Essex County Council is investing more money this year than ever in maintaining and repairing the roads of Essex. “An additional £37m is being invested to address potholes and carry out larger scale works, like resurfacing and vegetation clearance, through our priority one programme. “As a result, more potholes around the county are being fixed, so Sir Rod can join other Essex residents sailing along our roads.” Sir Rod, a member of the US Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and knighted by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2016, is continuing his tour. He is scheduled to perform in Spain and Denmark next month. Follow Essex news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
