Sione Tuipulotu acknowledged that his inaugural appearance as Scotland’s captain unfolded perfectly, as his team secured a commanding 57-17 win against Fiji. The Australia-born centre, who has accumulated 27 caps since his Scotland debut in 2021, expressed satisfaction with leading the squad to victory in his first match with the armband, though he anticipates more challenging encounters ahead. Reflecting on the match, Tuipulotu stated: “It went probably better than I thought it was going to go, to be honest.” He elaborated on the initial phase of the game, adding, “That first 20 minutes, I thought we were going to be in a real arm-wrestle, but the boys really fronted up.” Tuipulotu also recalled his pre-game advice to the team: “I did say in the huddle pre-game how important that first 20 minutes were going to be, especially against Fiji, because they were going to come out after their war dance with their tails up.” Looking ahead, he cautioned, “We talked about exiting cleanly after we scored points. We can’t afford to do that next week.” He further emphasized the upcoming challenge: “We’ve got to get our heads around our own game. The elephant in the room is that the world champions are in town next week and we get a free swing at them. It’s a unique opportunity.” Tuipulotu concluded by sharing his personal sentiment about the new role: “It feels like the start of something new for me. To start as captain feels like a new start.”
