RTÉ, the Irish public service broadcaster, has announced that Siobhán McSweeney will present the Irish adaptation of the reality program, The Traitors. McSweeney is widely recognized for her portrayal of Sister Michael in the comedy series Derry Girls and for her role as the presenter of The Great Pottery Throw Down. Production for The Traitors Ireland will take place in various locations across Ireland, involving participants drawn from across the nation. McSweeney stated that she “jumped” at the chance to host. She expressed, “Like everyone, I am a huge Traitors fan.” She further commented, “I’m looking forward to meeting our loyal Faithful and delicious Traitors. “The Irish have a charm and ability to deceive while smiling which will make this version rather special, I think.” McSweeney also mentioned that she felt like the “luckiest person in the world to watch them close up”. Steve Carson, RTÉ’s director of video, conveyed that the network was “really looking forward to bringing The Traitors Ireland to RTÉ audiences and delighted that Siobhán is going to be at the heart of it”. The series is scheduled for broadcast on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player in 2025, with production handled by Kite Entertainment. This series will involve 22 participants gathering at an isolated castle to engage in a contest centered on deception, betrayal, and trust, competing for a prize fund of €50,000. A subset of these individuals, known as the Traitors, will endeavor to covertly eliminate a fellow player each night, aiming to avoid detection. The remaining participants, referred to as the Faithfuls, are tasked with identifying the Traitors and expelling them from the competition. Daily, the collective undertakes various challenges, collaborating to increase the total amount in the prize fund. However, should a Traitor successfully avoid discovery for the entire duration of the game, they will claim the entirety of the prize money. The Traitors Ireland is the latest in a line of successful adaptations of this format, which has previously been seen in the UK, the US, and the Netherlands. The second series finale of the UK iteration, broadcast in January 2024, attracted an audience of almost seven million viewers. Notably, among the memorable contestants from that particular series was Diane Carson, a retired educator hailing from Northern Ireland. The BBC has confirmed plans to broadcast a celebrity edition of the program, alongside the confirmation of a third and fourth series. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
