Simon Rusk, the interim manager for Southampton, expressed that leading the team against Liverpool would be a “great honour,” though he must avoid becoming “overly emotional” regarding the circumstances. Rusk, who became the club’s under-21s manager during the summer, assumed temporary leadership of the senior squad after Russell Martin’s dismissal on Sunday. This change followed the Saints’ significant 5-0 loss to Tottenham at home. The 43-year-old faces a challenging initial assignment, preparing to confront Premier League leaders and reigning Carabao Cup champions Liverpool in the competition’s quarter-final on Wednesday night. During his pre-match news conference, when questioned about whether this experience would rank highly among his career moments, given his limited prior permanent first-team managerial roles, he responded: “Absolutely. We are working to prepare a game against one of the most in form teams in arguably the world or Europe. That speaks for itself.” He further elaborated on his approach, stating: “For me, I would ultimately like to focus on the process. If I become overly emotional in any aspect as a coach, I could start thinking and taking my eye off ball about what is the immediate task in hand. Where are the players at physically, mentally, emotionally? What is the opponent’s strengths? What is the opponent’s weaknesses? I just have to stick to that process” Rusk continued, explaining: “What I would say is that it is a great honour. I have worked at the club since the summer, it has got a great tradition, the fanbase is super committed and loyal and they are behind the players. So for me, concentrating on that as my focus is the right and professional thing to do.” He concluded by reflecting on the future: “There is always a period of reflection after, and it will be a proud moment for me without any shadow of a doubt and it is a great honour. It is a great honour to represent the club and guide them into such an important game.” Post navigation Rangers 1-1 Tottenham Match: Noteworthy Performances Liam Cullen’s Stellar Form Justifies Swansea City’s Contract Decision
