Plans have been submitted for the construction of a solar farm on a rural plot in Shropshire, which, if approved, would generate electricity for approximately 3,000 households. G Power Solar Ltd is behind the proposals for the 24.5 hectare (60.5 acre) location known as The Beeches, situated off Alkington Road, in proximity to the A41 and near Whitchurch. Rachael Leather, representing Atticus Planning, stated that sheep grazing would persist on the site surrounding the solar panels, which are designed to operate for approximately 40 years. The plans also include the planting of a new hedgerow for the duration of the project, the retention of all current trees and hedges, and the improvement of existing watercourses. Ms Leather further explained that installing the panels would cause “minimal” ground disturbance, and the design of the layout seeks to maximize site efficiency while preventing environmental impact. According to the plans, each panel will feature an anti-glare coating to reduce reflections and brightness caused by sunlight. Ms Leather mentioned that although the grid connection point for the solar farm remains unconfirmed, discussions are currently underway with Scottish Power Energy Networks. The site would incorporate access tracks to facilitate maintenance vehicles and enable farmers to care for the sheep. Shropshire Council is expected to render a decision on the proposals at a later date.
