A knitting collective has been providing solace to individuals undergoing end-of-life treatment within Shropshire medical facilities. The Kushdil ladies knitting group, based in Hadley, produced 100 knitted hearts. These hearts were distributed in sets of two to patients receiving palliative and end-of-life care at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH). A single heart is presented to the patient, with its counterpart given to a family member or close friend, intended to foster a sense of connection between them. Debbie Snooke, an end-of-life specialist care nurse, recounted an instance where “One lady said she put it under her pillow every night to feel close to her husband.” Ms. Snooke emphasized, “It is that connection between the patient and their loved one that is so special.” These “kindness hearts” were initially distributed during the pandemic period, a time when numerous families were unable to visit their ailing relatives. Ms. Snooke further explained, “We now gift the extended family a kindness heart, this provides comfort for them at that point and in the future.” She shared an example: “One family chose to tuck the kindness heart into their grandchild’s teddy bear.” The grandparent involved reportedly stated that “it was a beautiful connection between the baby and her grandfather who was receiving end of life care.” Jarmila Camier, one of the knitters, expressed feeling honored to be a member of the group. She remarked, “Kushdil means happy hearts, so it feels really special to have made these and to pass on something that can make somebody happy even in the last moments of their life.” The group was established in 2023, supported by funding from Telford and Wrekin Council. Beyond serving as a social support system for its members, the women also contribute to various charitable initiatives, such as crafting hats, scarves, and gloves for Telford Crisis Support, and producing blankets for SaTH’s dementia unit.
