Shropshire Council has issued an alert following the discovery of counterfeit QR codes affixed to several pay and display parking machines within Shrewsbury. The council shared this information on its Facebook page, including an image of a fraudulent code located on Claremont Street. The local authority clarified that none of its parking machines utilize QR codes. The Facebook post stated: “These codes link to a fraudulent website. Please do not scan the code. If you do – or have done – please don’t supply your bank details.” It further advised: “If you see one of these QR code stickers – in Shrewsbury or elsewhere – please gently remove it if you can and/or report it to us.” Comparable fraudulent schemes have been reported throughout the West Midlands region, notably in Telford. In September, Telford and Wrekin Council also announced that certain residents had received deceptive links via text message, instructing them to pay fabricated penalty charge notices.
