Shrewsbury Town has terminated the contract of head coach Paul Hurst after a nine-month tenure. This marks Hurst’s second period with the League One club, and his dismissal follows a sequence of only one victory in their last 12 matches across all competitions, which concluded with Saturday’s FA Cup loss to League Two Salford City. During his second stint, Hurst secured six wins out of 37 games. The 50-year-old departs Shrewsbury Town with the team positioned second from the bottom of League One, having suffered defeats in their last three EFL fixtures without registering a goal. Hurst’s re-appointment as manager occurred in January 2024. His prior leadership saw the club reach the League One play-off final in 2018, where they were defeated by Rotherham United, and an EFL Trophy final, which they lost to Lincoln. In a club statement, Shrewsbury announced: “It is with regret that Shrewsbury Town can confirm we have parted company with head coach Paul Hurst and assistant boss Chris Doig.” This decision followed an emergency board meeting conducted by the club on Sunday morning, during which chairman Roland Wycherley tendered his resignation. In a subsequent statement, he elaborated: “This morning, at our emergency Board meeting, I offered my immediate resignation as chairman. This was rejected by the board as despite all the positive changes we are making to reduce the losses – without my current financial support – we would not be able to continue to fulfil our commitments.” Last season, Hurst initially ensured Shrewsbury avoided relegation from League One, with the team concluding the season four points above the drop zone. However, this current season, the Shropshire-based club has achieved only two league wins and has been defeated in 14 of its 19 games across all competitions. Shrewsbury’s upcoming League One fixture is an away game against last-place Burton Albion, scheduled for Saturday, 9 November. In an analysis, BBC Radio Shropshire sports editor Nick Southall noted that Shrewsbury Town’s patience with head coach Paul Hurst and his assistant Chris Doig ultimately expired following the FA Cup loss to Salford. An emergency board meeting took place on Sunday morning, at which point the choice was made to separate from the pair. This would have been a difficult decision for chairman Roland Wycherley, who has a close relationship with Hurst and was responsible for his return to the club after his initial period in the 2017-18 season, which saw Town reach the League One play-off final before losing to Rotherham United. His subsequent tenure at Shrewsbury, however, was less successful, though it occurred under significantly different conditions. Hurst operated under the director of football, Micky Moore, rather than as an independent manager. Hurst’s capabilities are undeniable, and supporters will retain fond memories of the successful period during his leadership. Regrettably, the proverb ‘never go back’ appears applicable in this situation.
