An e-bike subscription program has been introduced in Shrewsbury, with the aim of encouraging residents to choose more environmentally friendly modes of transport. Local residents are offered the opportunity to utilize an electric bicycle for a 12-month period at a cost of less than £3 per week. This initiative, managed by the Shrewsbury Big Town Plan Partnership, was made possible through financial backing from the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Seb Slater, executive director of Shrewsbury Business Improvement District, stated, “We are looking for a wide range of people to join the scheme – especially those who don’t usually cycle.” The funding has facilitated the provision of 100 fully serviced e-bikes, and residents are now being urged to submit applications for the program. The subscription package includes a helmet and a bike lock, along with the option to add a pannier and a child seat. Ongoing support and maintenance for the bicycle will also be provided. It is anticipated that these bikes will offer an alternative method for commuting to the town centre, thereby decreasing the number of vehicles on the roads and resulting in financial savings. Councillor Ian Nellins, cabinet member for climate change, the environment and transport, remarked, “This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who commutes around Shrewsbury to utilise a cheap, active and greener method of travel.” He further added, “More people cycling in the town centre will help to reduce car dependence for short journeys and help to improve air quality.” The initial application window closes on 20 November. Successful applicants will be notified by 10 December, and the bikes are scheduled for delivery for use in January. The cost for the bikes is £10 per month for the first six months, increasing to £20 per month for the subsequent six months.
