Installation of bus shelters at semi-permanent stops in Shirebrook, a Derbyshire town, is scheduled to commence next week as part of efforts to redevelop its market place. Bolsover District Council announced that this initiative contributes to the establishment of a “bus mobility hub” in Shirebrook, forming part of the Market Place: REimagined project. Shelters are also slated for addition to nearby Ashbourne Street in the coming days. The council confirmed that any temporary relocation or closure of bus stops will be comprehensively advertised. The completion of this work is anticipated by January, at which point bus stops will resume operation and services will be rerouted to Market Street. District Councillor John Ritchie commented that prioritizing investment in town centres and high streets “remained a priority”. Derbyshire County Council has allocated a portion of its bus service improvement plan funding to this segment of the project. Mr. Ritchie, who serves as the cabinet member for growth, stated: “We need to see investment that will bring footfall to our high streets so that our local shops and businesses can increase their trade and in turn reinvest that income into the local community.“In particular, we thank Derbyshire County Council for directing some of their funding to Shirebrook Market Place to improve the central and well used bus stops on market place.” He further added, “We want to encourage sustainable modes of transport and these commercial bus routes to our neighbouring towns are a valuable link for people getting to work and accessing education, health, shopping and leisure opportunities.” The council indicated that the planned bus mobility hub will encompass enhancements to bus shelters and the implementation of real-time information systems. The initial phase of the project, conducted during the summer, involved the installation of new paving and surfacing surrounding the Mining Memorial, which was unveiled in May 2023. The memorial is accessible on weekends for individuals wishing to pay their respects, as well as on Remembrance Day. Furthermore, the council confirmed that Shirebrook Market Place is among the sites designated to receive supplementary funding as part of the government’s recently announced £15 million Regeneration Funding. This allocation will facilitate the creation of a new events hub and the completion of public realm works, scheduled for the New Year.
