A project described as “lifesaving,” designed to ensure the safety of individuals enjoying nightlife in Sheffield, has recommenced operations in the city for the holiday season. The Safe Square service, which began as a pilot program in December 2023, has reported assisting nearly 500 people in the city centre since its inception. Those in need of help can visit gazebos located in Barker’s Pool to receive medical aid, charge their mobile phones without cost, and obtain assistance with booking taxis. The service is scheduled to operate every Saturday throughout December, additionally on Friday, December 13 and 20, and on New Year’s Eve, from 22:00 to 04:30 GMT. Its funding ceased in October, leading to its temporary closure. However, Safe Square subsequently secured a short-term grant from the South Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit, enabling its reopening for the Christmas period. Douglas Johnson, a speaker for the Green group on Sheffield City Council, stated that his party intends to advocate for further funding to ensure the service’s permanent continuation. The councillor remarked, “Safe Square is a really important, lifesaving mission, it offers a point of refuge for anyone who needs help on a night out.” Kayleigh Waine, representing the Bamboo Door bar in Leopold Square, commented that the initiative contributes to saving NHS funds and resources by reducing the necessity for individuals to attend Accident and Emergency departments. She added, “I work in hospitality and we are the people who see the need for it the most.” Waine further noted, “It has been really successful, it has been helpful for people who are enjoying the nightlife and hopefully instils a feeling of being safe.” Safe Square utilizes the services of two private ambulance companies in conjunction with the IMP Group security firm. The majority of the pilot phase’s funding was provided by the South Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit, with additional support from South Yorkshire Police, Sheffield City Council, and Sheffield BID.
