A teenager from Sheffield is undertaking a daily five-kilometer (three-mile) run for a month to raise funds for charity, benefiting a friend diagnosed with a heart condition. The 16-year-old, Ruben Martin, initiated this challenge to collect donations for the British Heart Foundation following the hospitalization of his 17-year-old friend, Joe Grindle. Joe, who suffers from congenital heart disease, is presently recuperating after receiving treatment for an infection that developed subsequent to his open heart surgery. Ruben has already surpassed his initial fundraising goal of £104 and aims to reach £5,000 by the close of November. He commented: “My legs are quite sore, my calves are taking a bit of a hit at the minute, but it’s going all right.” Martin stated that his inspiration came from Sheffield Wednesday defender Liam Palmer, who completed a daily 10k (six-mile) run in remembrance of Jude Mellon-Jameson, the five-year-old son of goalkeeper Arron Mellon-Jameson, who passed away from cancer. “I thought I could do something like that – but not 10k a day. I can’t run 10k a day for a month,” Ruben explained. He mentioned that the endeavor has involved him running to see Joe at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield and maintaining his running routine even during a holiday in Lanzarote. Joe, who was born with a heart defect impacting its function, described his friend’s fundraising activities as “lovely”. “It’s nice to know you’ve got people supporting you. It’s quite a lonely time being in hospital,” he added. Joe, who spent three weeks hospitalized recovering from the infection and is now receiving outpatient care, noted that his illness compelled him to step away from football, a sport he and Ruben played together. “It’s just stop and start all the time, I miss half the season,” Joe stated. He continued, “It’s a bit frustrating, having to sit on the sidelines and watch everyone else play.” Joe expressed his hope of returning to the football pitch once his condition improves. Ruben revealed that he chose his initial target of £104 as a playful dig at Sheffield United, the team Joe supports. “United weren’t very good last season, they let in 104 goals,” he explained. “That’s all I wanted originally, but it’s gone above that, which has been great.” Furthermore, he completed one of his 5k runs by doing 15 laps around Bramall Lane, Sheffield United’s stadium, on the day of the Steel City Derby earlier in November. He noted, however, that he refrained from wearing his Sheffield Wednesday shirt because he “fancied coming out alive”. Ruben’s JustGiving page has presently accumulated over £3,500 in donations, with the challenge scheduled to conclude on 23 November.
