Approval has been granted for new 20 mph speed limits in two suburban areas of Sheffield. The city council’s transport, regeneration, and climate policy committee endorsed these proposals for the Greenland district of Darnall and the Brincliffe area within Nether Edge, subsequent to a public consultation process. Additionally, speed assessments are scheduled for Sheldon Road, prompted by residents’ requests for its inclusion in the initiative. Should the road satisfy the established criteria, a consultation regarding its potential addition will precede a final determination, as reported by the Local Democracy Service. Within Brincliffe, streets such as Wostenholm Road, a segment of Sharrow Lane and Union Road, Montgomery Road, Osborne Road, and Priory Road are designated for the scheme. The Greenland residential zone encompasses Industry Road, Phillimore Road, Clipston Road, and Fitzmaurice Road. A committee report indicated that for Greenland, out of 1,498 letters distributed to residents within the proposed limits, six emails supporting the plan and five objections were submitted. In Brincliffe, 2,372 residents received consultation letters, yielding 154 supportive comments and 26 objections. A report presented to the council noted that certain Brincliffe residents, even those who backed the initiative, expressed reservations regarding the incorporation of primary thoroughfares like Psalter Lane. The report specified: “These are ‘C class’ roads and in the council’s 20mph speed limit strategy, these are to be considered for inclusion on their own merits.”Speed surveys were conducted and all roads had an average speed of under 27mph, which allows their inclusion.“The police have not expressed any concern with these roads being included and neither have local members and one expressed support for these roads being in the scheme.” Vehicle speeds will undergo monitoring in both localities, and additional interventions will be contemplated if motorists fail to reduce their speed. Future areas slated for evaluation for 20 mph zones, where consultations are currently underway, include Earl Marshall, Loxley/Walkley, Netherthorpe, and Bradway. Furthermore, other initiatives already approved for the 2024-25 period are situated in Longley Hall, Beaver Hill, Tapton, and Collegiate.
