A proposal to construct a five-storey apartment building in Sheffield, which involved the demolition of a former gospel meeting hall, has been turned down. PTA Developments had intended to develop 53 residential units on the parcel of land situated off Carter Knowle Road in the southern part of the city. However, Sheffield City Council’s planning committee rejected the project, citing its failure to fulfill requirements for affordable housing, as advised by planning officers. According to a spokesperson for the developer, providing the financial contribution for affordable housing was deemed to “simply wasn’t viable” for the firm. While initial designs proposed 67 new apartments for the location, the scope of the development was subsequently scaled back. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported that the council received 42 formal objections to the application, alongside a petition opposing the plans that garnered 108 signatures. During the planning committee meeting held on Tuesday, it was disclosed that the council had anticipated the developer would allocate one apartment under the government’s First Homes discount initiative, aimed at first-time buyers. Additionally, a contribution of £530,555 was requested from PTA Developments to support affordable housing provisions in other areas of the city. Nevertheless, an agent representing PTA Developments stated that the company was unable to financially meet these specific requirements. The application was then unanimously rejected by the councillors.
