Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer discussed Bournemouth’s “clever” set-pieces on Match of the Day, following the Cherries’ late equalizer against Aston Villa, which originated from a free-kick set-piece. Shearer remarked, “We saw them do the same thing against Arsenal, where they worked it really well.” He explained that Bournemouth’s initial strategy in the match involved repeatedly directing the ball to the far post. However, he noted that “[Emi] Martinez had no problems with those balls because he loves that.” Shearer further commented, “If you are going to put a ball in to the far post like that, he will come and get them all afternoon.” Upon Evanilson’s introduction, Bournemouth adjusted their tactics, attempting a different approach. While their first effort with this new strategy did not fully succeed, Shearer believed “that should’ve been a warning sign for Aston Villa.” The subsequent attempt came from a comparable position. Shearer suggested that if Matty Cash had positioned himself “five-yards further back, which he should have done because he was in no man’s land,” he would have been able to defend the play. Instead, Evanilson was allowed to move away from Jhon Duran and score. Bournemouth executed the play effectively, choosing not to target the far post again. Shearer described it as “a clever ball in, clever moment and a wonderful header.” This play ultimately secured the point for Bournemouth, demonstrating their proficiency, as Shearer concluded, “they are clever from set-pieces.”
