A seven-year-old boy has received a national award after waking his parents during the night to report “loud noises” emanating from his brother’s room. Louie’s older sibling, Harley, had suffered a seizure at their home in Alcester, Warwickshire, and was subsequently discovered unresponsive by their mother, Sophie. Although Harley had a previous diagnosis of epilepsy, his prior episodes had only involved brief lapses in consciousness. Sophie indicated that the family was informed Harley would not have survived without Louie’s intervention. The schoolboy was presented with an Epilepsy Star award by the national charity Epilepsy Action, and is now recognized as his “brother’s hero.” His actions enabled Sophie to contact 999 while her husband quickly retrieved a defibrillator. Sophie described the moment: “I went into the bedroom to open the door to have the fright of my life. Harley was unconscious, unresponsive and he was making noises. The right side of his face had dropped all the way down.” An ambulance arrived within minutes, allowing Harley to receive medical treatment. “I thought I had lost a son,” the mother further stated. “If Louie hadn’t of alerted [us] when he did Harley wouldn’t have made it. We would have woken up in the morning to my eldest baby passed away.” Rebekah Smith, deputy chief executive at Epilepsy Action, affirmed that the award was well-deserved. She added, “We hope Louie feels proud of himself for his amazing quick thinking. His bravery is truly inspiring.”
