An individual identified as a serial shoplifter, who focused on retail establishments within Coventry city centre, has been given a 14-week prison sentence. According to West Midlands Police, following an alert regarding stolen merchandise from a store on Fairfax Street on Friday, law enforcement personnel identified Chloe Neville as the primary suspect and monitored her activity via CCTV footage. The police force further stated that it successfully connected the 39-year-old, who has no permanent residence, to several additional retail thefts that occurred in the city centre during September and October. Neville pleaded guilty to four charges of theft and one charge of assault, subsequently receiving her jail sentence at Coventry Magistrates’ Court on Saturday. This sentencing coincides with findings from a House of Lords inquiry, which concluded that shoplifting is not being adequately addressed nationwide. Police forces documented 443,000 incidents last year; however, the inquiry was informed that these figures represent “a drop in the ocean” when contrasted with the actual extent of the issue.
