A version of the classic Cinderella story, specifically tailored for individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities, is scheduled to debut in London. Titled “Sensory Cinders,” this show will be performed from November 2 to November 5 at Soho Place. Its creators, the Hull-based charity Concrete Youth, state that it marks the inaugural production of its type to be staged in the West End. The charity indicated that this initiative signifies “a significant step” in advancing inclusivity. Daniel Swift, the charity’s chief executive, characterized the event as “a historic moment”. This production delves into themes such as identity, self-expression, and magic. It incorporates specially crafted sensory materials, an original musical score, and modifications to the conventional plot and characters. Mr. Swift, who also serves as a co-director for the charity, stated: “The severe lack of cultural provision for audiences labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities has been a longstanding issue.” He added that “This production represents a significant step towards addressing this disparity and promoting ongoing inclusivity in the West End and national cultural landscape.” Belle Streeton, the show’s director, commented: “This pantomime has something for everybody, and I can’t wait for our audiences to see the fruits of our labour and all the love and hard work that we’ve poured into this show.” The production was developed in collaboration with The Civic, Barnsley, and the Henshaws arts and crafts centre located in Knaresborough. Additional support was provided by Sheffield Theatres and Arts Council England.
