Street patrols are scheduled for two towns in Leicestershire, forming part of an initiative aimed at ensuring public safety during the Christmas season. Additionally, the “Celebrate Safely” campaign will feature the deployment of a knife arch at unspecified sites within the North West Leicestershire district, operational from the present until January 1, 2025. These measures, including patrols in Ashby and Coalville, were confirmed by the district council as part of a collaborative campaign involving the police and the fire service. Michael Wyatt, the deputy leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, stated: “The campaign is about ensuring everyone can enjoy the festive season while feeling secure and protected.” The patrols will entail street wardens checking security personnel at licensed venues and distributing test strips to patrons to detect potential drink spiking. Wyatt further recommended that individuals “plan their nights ahead” and urged them to utilize programs like Ask Angela, a system enabling people to discreetly inform bar staff if they feel uneasy. Personnel will then facilitate the departure of individuals using this scheme from the premises via an alternative exit. Individuals can follow BBC Leicester on Facebook, X, or Instagram.
