An expansion project for a secondary school, designed to incorporate 10 additional classrooms, has received official approval. These plans for Thorp Academy in Ryton, which also aim to establish new instructional areas and enlarge the dining facilities, were sanctioned by Gateshead Council. Councillors were informed that the academy anticipates accommodating an extra 170 students and hiring six new employees by September 2025. Presently, a portion of the student body is housed in temporary modular structures. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Thorp Academy was provided with over £330,000 in January 2023 to assist in managing its increasing class sizes. Official planning papers indicated that the proposed two-storey addition would exert a “minimal impact” on the visual aspects and notable features of the site. Officials from the council expressed contentment that the development includes adequate parking provisions for staff and would not generate “highway issues.” Students who travel by car have already been instructed to utilize alternative parking facilities nearby, such as those at Ryton’s cricket and rugby clubs. The submitted proposal concluded by stating: “This application is for a modest extension to an existing school building.” It further detailed that the project “will facilitate increased capacity for the dining facilities, improve the operation performance of existing facilities and improve security for the school as a whole.” For updates, follow BBC North East on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram.
