Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), a government agency, has announced it is “considering other options” for the site of a nuclear waste disposal facility on the Lincolnshire coast. The proposed geological disposal facility (GDF) by NWS involves a land-based component designed to receive waste, which would then be transported through tunnels to a disposal area beneath the sea. The initial focus of the search was a former gas terminal in Theddlethorpe. However, in an update released on Tuesday, NWS stated that “competing interests” concerning this site have “matured” over the past year. The agency added that a “range of studies” is currently being conducted within the designated search area, which encompasses the electoral wards of Mablethorpe and Withern and Theddlethorpe. Simon Hughes, communities director for NWS, stated in the update: “No decisions on these options have been made at this stage, we will publish an update early next year and our teams will be out in communities to explain our findings, hear feedback and consider next steps.” The concept of a GDF was first proposed more than three years ago. NWS indicated that the multimillion-pound project is projected to generate employment, enhance transportation infrastructure, and stimulate the regional economy. NWS conducted a series of consultation events in the Theddlethorpe area to elaborate on the plans and address inquiries from local residents. In response, campaigners asserted that the project would be “disastrous” for the seaside economy. Guardians of the East Coast reported that a survey of over 1,000 visitors to the Mablethorpe and Skegness resorts indicated that the “great majority” would be deterred from visiting the area. Victoria Atkins, MP for Louth and Horncastle, characterized the expanded scope of the plans as “deeply worrying” and suggested that residents would feel “betrayed.” She further stated: “I, alongside many of my constituents, oppose this nuclear waste dump in our area. I urge the community partnership to hold a referendum in the next 12 months so that residents can have their say and take control of our area’s future.” Since NWS announced its plans in 2021, the former Theddlethorpe gas terminal site has attracted additional interest from other energy industries. These include proposals for a carbon capture and storage facility, the potential for a gas-fired power station, and consideration as a landing point for electricity cables from North Sea windfarms. While the proposed location for the under-sea disposal site remains unchanged, NWS is now widening its search for the land-based facility. This expanded search will be confined to the electoral wards of Mablethorpe and Withern and Theddlethorpe, with NWS not identifying a specific location until next year.
