A service dog, instrumental in saving lives across Europe for more than ten years, is retiring. Jarvis, an 11-year-old search and rescue dog with the Essex County Fire & Rescue Service (ECFRS), will step down from his duties. Throughout his career, the cocker spaniel was deployed to significant rescue incidents nationwide, notably in London and Jersey. His handler, Graham Currie, referred to the dog as his “best pal,” highlighting their complete mutual trust over the years. Mr. Currie explained, “I am with him 365 days a year.” He added, “The number of places I’ve been to and people I’ve met has been all because of him,” and emphasized their reciprocal reliance: “He’s got to have trust and faith in me, and I have that in him.” Early in his career, Jarvis held the top position at both the National Resilience Urban Search and Rescue team and the UK International Search and Rescue Team. In January 2023, he was deployed to Jersey to assist in the search for 12 missing individuals following an explosion at a block of flats. In 2020, he was dispatched to the Bow crane collapse in east London, where he was the only dog small enough to navigate the wreckage. The fire service noted that he has also worked and trained in locations such as Scotland, Sicily, Germany, and Paris, consistently recognized for his boundless energy. Although his active deployment days are concluding, Mr. Currie stated that Jarvis will remain an integral part of the ECFRS. “When he retires, he will still come out with me, but he won’t be deployed on jobs,” he said. “He’ll stay in the van and continue training. Otherwise, left at home he would die of a broken heart.” The ECFRS calculated his period of service as being equivalent to 77 human years.
