BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty has addressed questions concerning Sean Dyche’s position at Goodison Park. A query from Graham stated: “Surely the end is nigh for Sean Dyche at Everton? While I appreciate his work in the past couple of years, surely this season he has really under-delivered in terms of points against who we have played? He is not attacking enough and he is just too cautious with substitutes and tactics. I’m not expecting us to be prime Barcelona but surely we should be mid-table comfortably by now, given the fixtures?” Mr. McNulty concurred with this assessment of the current season. He noted that Everton’s record of two wins from 12 games, following a favorable initial run of fixtures, is highly disappointing, as has been the overall quality and style of play, which he described as “very sub-standard.” A growing sense of frustration and dissatisfaction among Everton supporters regarding the team’s performance is evident. Mr. McNulty reiterated his previous stance that he does not anticipate Sean Dyche remaining as Everton manager next season. This view is based on the expectation that prospective new owner Dan Friedkin will likely seek to appoint his own manager, coupled with Dyche’s contract concluding at the end of the current season. The possibility of an earlier decision raises several considerations. Questions arise regarding who would currently be authorized to make such a decision while Everton awaits clearance for the Friedkin takeover, and who would be willing to accept the managerial role with new ownership potentially only weeks away. Mr. McNulty suggested that the preferred outcome for the new owners would likely involve Dyche ensuring Everton’s relative safety from Premier League relegation before the team moves into its new stadium next season, followed by a change in management. He indicated that a potential change might only occur if Everton appears to be in severe danger of relegation, especially given the challenging schedule of upcoming fixtures. However, the prevailing sentiment appears to have shifted in recent weeks, underscoring an urgent need for Dyche to secure victories.
