An inclusive and accessible play park, situated on the seafront, has officially opened. The facility, located on Lowry Road in Seaburn, incorporates custom-designed play equipment to establish a wheelchair-friendly environment. Sunderland City Council stated that it collaborated with local schoolchildren over several years to develop the designs, which include features such as rainbow swings and a tree house. Interactive digital play equipment was also installed, alongside Wi-Fi, “to really bring the park into the 21st Century”, as stated by the authority. The official inauguration of the park was carried out by Allison Chisnall, the Mayor of Sunderland, together with students from Seaburn Dene Primary School who had participated in the design process. The project’s estimated cost is nearly £1.5m, funded through an agreement between the Labour-led council and its regeneration company, Siglion Developments LLP. The park further features multi-level play areas, sand and sensory zones, and picnic tables designed for wheelchair users. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems were also installed following security concerns raised by Sunderland councillors regarding the site.
