Durham all-rounder Scott Borthwick has relinquished his captaincy to take on a new role as player-coach. Borthwick, 34, who returned to Durham for a second spell from Surrey in 2021, has signed a new two-year deal. In a statement, Durham indicated that Borthwick will now play “an integral part” in developing players from the professional teams, academy, and pathway squads. He will remain available for Durham in all formats until at least the end of the 2026 season. Having progressed through the club’s academy, Borthwick was a member of the Durham squad that secured three County Championships and the one-day trophy, while also contributing to guiding Durham back to Division One in 2023. “I’m delighted to be taking on this new role,” Borthwick said. “I’ve been fortunate to achieve so much as a player with this club, from an 11-year-old in the academy to being captain – so there is nowhere I would rather start my coaching journey than with Durham.” He added, “I’m looking forward to learning from the talented coaches and staff we have across our teams, whilst training hard and remaining available to play and be the best possible player still.” Borthwick concluded, “Durham has given me so much in my career so far and I can’t wait to get started on this new chapter.”
