Rail services throughout Scotland are functioning as usual, even as a system malfunction impacts other operations across the United Kingdom. Network Rail is encountering a nationwide issue with the radio communication system utilized by drivers and signallers, which has resulted in service delays and cancellations. Commuter journeys connecting Glasgow and Edinburgh are proceeding without disruption or queues. Travelers are encouraged to verify their specific routes prior to departure. Operations at Glasgow’s Central Station and Queen Street station are currently normal, with no delays or cancellations displayed on the departure boards. Paul McKay, a spokesperson for ScotRail, stated: “Our colleagues are Network Rail are experiencing an industry-wide problem with communications systems, you should contact them if you have any questions on the fault. “ScotRail services are operating well, with some minor delays in places.”We’re asking customer to check before they travel. The fault does not affect the safe running of trains.” ScotRail also noted a distinct problem affecting certain journey searches on its mobile application, which the provider is in the process of rectifying. Travelers have the option to access real-time journey details via the Network Rail website. The delays experienced by Network Rail were attributed to a malfunction of the onboard GSM-R communication system. The GSM-R system is engineered to facilitate digital communication between train drivers and signallers with signalling centers. The operator is currently conducting an investigation into this failure. Douglas Cairns, operator manager for Traffic Scotland, advised on BBC Radio’s Good Morning Scotland programme: “Our advice would be to check in with your transport operator – Scotrail or another – to check on what cancellations or delays there are as the morning continues.” Copyright 2024 BBC.
