Scotland’s coach, Gregor Townsend, stated that playing against New Zealand Maori will serve as preparation for the “physical challenges” his team will encounter during their tour. The Scotland men’s team is scheduled to play New Zealand Maori, marking their first encounter in 25 years, as part of their upcoming summer tour. The fixture for Townsend’s squad is set for 5 July at Semenoff Stadium in Whangarei. Historically, New Zealand Maori secured an 18-15 victory over Ian McGeechan’s team in New Plymouth in 2000. Their initial meeting occurred in 1998 in Edinburgh, where the visiting New Zealand Maori team won 24-8. Following the early July fixture, Townsend’s Scottish team is slated to compete in two Test matches in the Pacific Islands; the specific dates and opponents for these games are yet to be confirmed. Townsend stated, “Next year’s tour represents an opportunity to take on two quality Test teams in the Pacific Islands, which is always a unique tour for our players to experience on and off the field.” He added, “The New Zealand Maori game will set us up for the physical challenges we’ll face later on the tour. We are excited about returning to a part of the world where rugby is central to their culture.” Townsend further commented, “Playing in New Zealand is always special, especially against a side with such deep rugby history as New Zealand Maori. It has been a while since we last visited New Zealand and it will be a brilliant way to start the tour.”
