A schoolgirl has passed away in a hospital following an incident in County Wexford, which Gardaí (Irish police) have characterized as a “fatal assault.” The primary school in New Ross where she was a student issued a statement, referring to the event as a “terrible tragedy for the family, our school and our community.” Law enforcement and emergency personnel responded to a residence in the town around 23:45 local time on Sunday. The girl was transported to a hospital in Waterford, where she succumbed to her injuries during the early hours of Monday. Additionally, a man and a woman, both in their 30s, sustained injuries; however, these are not considered to be life-threatening. Authorities understand that Gardaí are pursuing a specific investigative path and are not seeking additional individuals in relation to the inquiry. While the girl’s exact age has not been officially verified, it is thought she was between seven and nine years old. New Ross Educate Together NS, a local primary school, released a statement on Monday confirming that its staff had been informed of “the death of a student who attends our school.” Principal Therese White stated, “We are deeply saddened by these events. Our sympathy and thoughts are with family and friends.” She further mentioned that teachers were “helping students to deal with this tragic event.” “The school has implemented our Critical Incident Management Plan and we are in receipt of support from the National Educational Psychological Service,” she continued. Her statement indicated, “They have been with us all day supporting and advising teachers in their efforts to assist students at this time.” Ms White also noted that the school intended to be “sharing information with parents today around how they can support their children at this difficult time.” John Dwyer, a local councillor, informed BBC News NI that New Ross is “a relatively small place and it was not very often that something dramatic happens.” He further stated that the schoolgirl would have had friends within the town and would have been thoroughly integrated into the community. He remarked, “There is a dreadful sense of horror in this town that this has befallen a family.” The independent councillor extended his condolences to everyone who knew the victim.
